Fuel Injection Project

This project has yet to be completed due to several technical details.

The major one being not having my bike to ride in the summer as I spent to much time getting this project working so it will have to wait untill Winter 2002 -2003.

The intention of this project is to convert my 1200 Bandit from carburettors to fuel injection. This is to be done by using the injector bodies, wiring loom, CDI, coils and ancillary sensors from a GSXR750WW. I will also be using the speedometer from a 750WY as I think they look better

Modifications required/completed:

  • · Re-manufactured air box to mount fuel pump and filter on away from sources of potential ignition.
  • · Drilled and tapped sprocket shaft to mount speedometer pick-up.
  • · Cut sprocket cover to mount the other half of the speedometer pick-up.
  • · Tank outlet return modifications.

Additional support equipment

I had run a Wiseco big bore kit for part of last year (1216) with nothing but problems basically revolving around ‘Detonation’. I checked compression this was only 10.5:1, so it wasn’t that. Checked the mixture seemed a little rich (plug chop) nothing to extreme, or so I thought. The bike kept overheating and becoming difficult to start when hot so I decided to go back to standard. Fortunately I did this as I discovered the detonation just in time. My investigations indicated to me that “Bore wash” from it being far to rich. How do I prevent this happening again? by using an oxygen sensor when setting it up.

The oxygen sensor comes in two forms single wire and 3/4 wire self heating. You also need some means of reading the output from the sensor. To this I’ve included a wiring diagram to make an air/fuel mixture meter. If you want any info on how to use them just surf the web looking for air/fuel mixture meter (thats how I got the wiring diagram).

You then need to drill a hole in your collector box and weld a nut on to it to mount the Oxygen sensor. Having set the bike up remove the sensor and block the hole.

Plus a little graph to explain it all:
